| We are currently trying to establish some facts on hedgie lineage. As we know it isn't safe to breed with hedgies of an unknown lineage because you can't tell what diseases are in the lines. But what confuses me is that my registered male has a lineage but on his certificate of registration he has many blank spaces? So we're trying to find out if both hogs are registered and their parents at what point is it safe to start the lineage. From g grandparents gg grandparents ggg grandparents ect. |

| | Do you mean with regard to how distantly the two hogs you are breeding have to be related or do you mean how long do you have to have lineage records to be able to safely breed from an 'established lineage'? |

| | My honest answer is I have no idea, I've always thought it was pretty much left to the breeder's discretion. I think the lineage for our male we have up to g grandparents on the maternal side and grandparents on the paternal side, but not entirely sure off the top of my head. I would imagine great grandparents would be a pretty safe bet, what do you think? |

| | They would know, I would imagine they have long established lines given that they have been breeding for years! But hey, you have to start somewhere and breeding from registered hogs which you can at least guarantee are unrelated is a good start right? |

| It sounds like a good start but what about the diseases that may be in the lines? You can't guarantee there wouldn't be any diseases.Unless you hold back what you breed for a time.Or maybe a vet could find this out....Lois? |

| | Not very many diseases are genetically linked. If you do end up with a hog with a genetic linked disease you would not use the animal in a breeding herd, neither would you continue to breed from that lineage. That would be the only way to try and irradicate these diseases from the lines. |

| | Is it possible for a vet to do any genetics tests to check for possible diseases? |

| | Wow, it is technically possible, but would cost a FORTUNE! I mean, they don't even do it in top racehorses or dogs and stuff they only use things like hip scoring etc etc. I doubt you'd find a vet willing to do it, since they would have to be sent of to external labs, no practice would have the technology on site. It's unfortunate, but if you think even in humans they can't really screen for many genetic diseases. |

| I have contacted the IHA to trace the lineage of Cholet....It seems she has descended from the Bramblewood line as i was told her parents were bred by them.If this is the case there are no red flags for this line which is good news for us Lois as it means no known diseases are in the lines. I will keep you updated. |

| Cholet is now registered with the IHR and Orinoco is registered with both. I recommend you contact the IHR and submit your registration details. The link is on my site. Jeanne is now trying to trace Cholets ancestry for me |

| After much research i have decided to breed from Adelaide, she is registered and so is her mother but there seems to be no other information on her lines. Adelaide is a healthy hog and from a breeder i know and trust. When hogs first started being kept as pets here and indeed today stilll no one really knew of the registeries. As long as the hog is healthy and not a result of inbreeding i see no reason to begin a line for it. |
